The ABCs of Dealing With Domestic Violence

Domestic violence was a part of my family's life for years. When I made the decision to leave with my children, I had to rely on the law to provide the protection we needed. Sometimes, the system does not work as fast as we want. I soon learned that going at it alone without any guidance caused significant delays. I created this blog to help others who are seeking legal means to deal with an abusive ex. By making the right moves, it is possible to get the necessary protections in place so that you can also live a happier and healthier life.

Has Your Elderly Parent Received a Traffic Violation? 4 Steps You Need to Take Right Away

by Gina Hill

If your aging parent has received a traffic violation, and you want to make sure that their rights are protected, you may need to intervene. This is particularly important if you think that their medical or mental condition has deteriorated to the point where they're no longer safe to be behind the wheel. To help you protect your parent's rights, as well as their safety, here are four steps you should take if they've received a traffic violation.

Obtain a Copy of the Violation

If your aging parent was issued a traffic violation, the first thing you need to do is obtain a copy of the violation. You need to know what the violation was issued for, as well as any notes that the issuing officer may have provided. The information on the citation will let you know if it was a simple infraction (such as a rolling stop) or if their violation was for something much more dangerous.

Schedule a Medical Exam

If you're concerned that your aging parent may no longer be safe behind the wheel, you'll need to schedule a medical exam for them. Their exam should include vision and hearing tests, as well. As a person ages, their reaction time can be affected. If that has happened to your parent, a thorough health exam will help identify that problem. An exam will also be able to identify hearing or vision changes that are affecting your parent's ability to drive safely.

Enroll Them in a Driving Course

If your parent appears to still be able to handle the responsibility of driving a car but their skills have gotten rusty over the years, it's time to sign them up for a driving course. A refresher course will help your parent relearn the skills they need to be safe on the road. Not only that, but the course may also earn them a discount on their auto insurance. As an added benefit, the driving course may help your parent keep their driving privileges once they go to court for their traffic violation.

Seek Legal Representation for Them

Finally, if your aging parent has received a traffic violation, you'll need to seek legal representation for them, especially if they're at risk of losing their driving privileges. An attorney will provide much-needed legal assistance for your parent during their court appearance. They can also answer any legal questions regarding the citation process.
